Since I like my stories with more background and more world building, I couldn't really get into this book. The dialogue is good enough and the characters seem realistic in actions and thoughts which could be why the world view is so narrow. But without a background development, I couldn't sympathize with them. Probably won't be reading the rest of the series unless they are free.Product details

The Torturer's Daughter by Zoe Cannon is a fast-paced, supremely well-written YA dystopian. Cannon masterfully wraps up the intrigue in the psychological ups and downs of the protagonist, Becca. While there is action that keeps this plot taut, there is also a lot of interior back and forth Becca goes through as she tries to figure out what her options are in a world where nothing makes sense. Even the antagonists (and I won't say who they are) are sympathetic and well thought-out. At the end of this book, you'll find yourself asking if the bad guys really were bad guys. A great statement on society wrapped up as a thrilling YA read.
Wow this was a different story, I really enjoyed how could a person kill another person. Read it and go on.
It took a little bit for me to get into but I'm glad I stuck with it because I really enjoyed the storyline. I will be reading the resr of the books in this series.
I was hooked the second I started reading.

Kept me turning through the pages to see what happened next.
Normally for a dystopic novel to rate five stars it must be complex, span generations and offer a universal lesson. Such is not the case with this novel. The characters are few, the action is slight, and the full mechanics of political arena are diffuse at best. But this novel does deserve a two stars for the intriguing interplay amoung its main characters. While it is classified as a Young Adult Novel, it pertains to a much broader maturity range. While our protagonist finds herself immersed in a society where distrust and on-going fear pervades all levels of society, valuable and universal lessons are shown as the book closes; The only person who we can ever fully trust is ourselves and unless we are true to our own perception of the world, our lives will be wasted. This truism may, in fact, may be in the support or in the destruction of the world around you but, you must first define yourself and then follow through with this definition regardless of the consequences.....
Wonderful premise, however it was bogged down in a lot of unnecessary drama, with no detail or explanation as to how the culture evolved.
The Mother and daughter characters were not believable in their responses to the situations. Very little depth to either character.
This was a pretty good book about a teenage girl living in a dystopian society. The premise was interesting. The daughter of one of the society's "torturer's" begins to have doubts about the society and heads towards becoming a dissident. As the book progresses, we see how she interacts with her mother, people who she names as dissidents but who aren't, people who turn out to be dissidents, innocent bystanders, etc - a whole range of characters. This character interactions and development are the book's strength.
I think the book could have been improved by some solid information about the society where our characters live. What is it like? We know it is savage. But it would be good to know more about its leaders and why they run things the way they do. What do they gain? What are their beliefs? Why is someone a dissident simply by disagreeing with one of society's rules? It seems pretty harsh and it would be good to learn more about it. To me the characters live in a bit of a vacuum - we know things are bad for them but we don't really know why.
Having said this, I'd still recommend it because, apart from what I think is missing, it was an enjoyable read.
